We have been so fortunate to have Ms. Hand working with Junior Infants over the past number of weeks. She has taught us all so much about spring, the farm, the vet and growing plants from seeds along with so many more topics. We are most grateful to her for planning such exciting and fun lessons and we wish her the very best as she moves to 6thclass.
We hope everyone had a lovely mid-term break and we hope everyone is feeling refreshed and rested and ready to continue our term to the Easter break. There will be lots of fun and excitement between now and our next holidays. Now that it is March we have a few important dates and lots of celebrations coming up. Seachtain na Gaeilge begins on the 1stof March and will finish on the 17thwhich is also St. Patrick’s Day. This time of year gives us the perfect opportunity to use the Irish we have and to learn some new vocabulary and phrases. The Junior Infant pupils are fantastic Irish speakers so if you would like to improve your Irish, look no further!
Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, each pupil planted cress seeds a few weeks ago during Aistear and they even decorated their ‘St. Patrick’s Pot’ which they planted the seeds in. The pupils will be bringing home their cress just in time for the celebrations. Shrove Tuesday is on the 5thof March this year and we are fortunate enough to each receive our very own pancake on the day from the PTA. A huge thanks to the school PTA for organising this treat. Wednesday 6this of course Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent so you may wish to discuss this with your child as we will be talking about the different things we plan to improve or challenges we can take on during Lent, such as being kind, as well as discussing things we might give up for the period. The children will be learning all about the Easter story in the lead up to Easter and will be learning hymns such as ‘Give Me Oil in My Lamp’.
The Aistear theme for the month of March is shopping and the restaurant and we will be opening our very own restaurant here in the classroom. We will be serving the highest quality food and beverages. Booking in advance is recommended due to high demand! The class will also be designing their own shop fronts, creating their own menus and will even be learning how to create their own shopping list so they will be a great help on your future shopping trips.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on the displays outside the classroom to see some of the fabulous work Junior Infants are doing. Asking your child to explain what they are learning about in school is also a great form of revision and consolidation.
